Winter Stroll For Gills
Saturday 19th December/3pm
County got into the Christmas spirit by gifting 3 points to Gillingham at Priestfield today. Goals from Denis Oli, Fabien Brandy and John Nutter were enough to stroll past the gutless Hatters, who did get a consolation in the 67th minute with a fine Michael Rose strike.
Pure FM's radio coverage began at 2pm as usual, WITHOUT the excellent Pete Liggins on duty as presenter, who, ALLEGEDLY has been suspended by the local radio station due to a complaint from an individual within SCFC. No prizes...
Within the first 5 minutes of this match, the Gills were in front and it seems as if this young County side just expect to go behind nowadays...goals conceded are just accepted with a 'hands-on-hips, try and look dejected, staring down at the floor' action by most of the side.
You have to credit the likes of Johnny Mullins, David Poole, Michael Raynes - who, for all his inability to kick a ball, puts in all the effort in the world - and Michael Rose, playing through the pain of a double hernia to compete for his side for the effort they're putting in. But comparing that to the likes of Jamie Vincent, Oli Johnson etc, there's just nothing. What us County fans lack in pure skill and ability, we'd surely do better in the guts and sheer determination stakes.
Michael Rose did stick a fine curling effort in from about 25 yards, but it was game over by then and hey ho, we've lost again. That's nine in a row. Remember, merely two years ago in 2007 when we were in the midst of another nine-in-a-row feat...how times change.
Doubts have started to be voiced over Gary Ablett, who said in his post-match interview today that he had told the players 'if he can't get the best out of them, maybe it's time to bring in someone who can...', with the fans thinking that this means he's off.
My guess is he'll get over the disappointment and stick with us. The protest march on Wednesday may help vent a lot of pent-up frustration from the fans, and MAYBE even some sort of clue as to what's going on, and when we can finally get out of this mess. But we need to stick with Ablett. Sure, a little more tactical awareness wouldn't go amiss on the pitch, but he's learning. He's learning on the job, with (and I know it's the most repeated phrase ever) 'one hand tied behind his back'. Cut the guy some slack, him and his backroom staff care about this club (giving £1200 of their own money, for example) and IF we get out of this mess in tact, let him show what he can do with the proper backing and maybe his own signings, unlike the deals with Matty McNeil (brought in by Mark Maguire), and the trio of Luca Havern, Adam Griffin, and David Poole (brought back in by Jim Melrose - remember him?)
So it's nine losses in a row and maybe we're on for another Football League record. It's absolutely gutting.
Remember, get yourselves to the Protest March on Wednesday, headed by the excellent Dave Schofield. 11am, Stockport Town Hall. Be there.
Still present in some of the fans at least...'Animo Et Fide'.
