Spot-On County Seal Win

0 - 1

Prenton Park

12th October/7:45pm

Attendance: 5645

Brilliant Carl Baker sealed County's second away win of the season last night in the televised clash with Tranmere.

The 1-0 victory also sees County defeat Rovers at Prenton Park for the first time in seven visits.

Boss Gary Ablett was disappointed to see Nicholas Bignall fail a fitness test, so the under-pressure Peter Thompson came into the starting line-up.

In a decent game on Sky Sports, two honest (if lacking in real quality) sides got the ball down and passed it, Tranmere caretaker boss Les Parry impressing in his first match.

In a first half dominated chance-wise by Tranmere, Welshman Owain fon Williams kept County in the game with three point-blank saves from Gareth Edds, Ian Thomas-Moore and Craig Curran, as The Hatters right side was exposed to the impressive debutant Bakayogo.

COunty did have a few chances though, keeper Luike Daniels poor kick falling straight to Carl Baker, who controlled and fired in a half volley from all of 50 yards. Baker was unlucky to see the ball skid off the surface and float harmlessly wide with Daniels scrambling.

The second half was played at a much quicker pace, balls being zipped around off the surface and the teams struggling to keep possession.

The game hinged on a pivotal moment, Michael Raynes long kick up-field evading everyone as James Vincent sprung the offside trap and found himself one-on-one with Daniels.

Vincent took it round Daniels, never looking confident of scoring, and the Rovers stopper appeared to take 'Vinny's' legs.

A penalty was awarded, and a harsh red card to add insult to injury.

Sub keeper Jack Collister's first task was to pick the ball out of the net as Baker's expert penalty flew into the top corner.

Tranmere stepped up their game, but chances were spurned by Moore, Gornell and Shuker as County held out for a valuable win that lifts us up to 13th in the table.

Come on County.

Star Player

Carl Baker - Holds onto the ball too long at times...but what a class act. Ran the game for the most part, pinging cross-field balls straight on-target each time. Lifting his collar to reveal the name 'Mike' was a class touch as well. Quality.
