Brave County Fall

2 - 0

Elland Road

5th September '09/3pm

Attendance: 22,870

County went down 2-0 today in front of almost 23000 at Elland Road as Leeds Utd collected their 14th consecutive home victory, setting a new record in the process.

Owain fon Williams came back into the starting eleven after sitting out the midweek win over Crewe. Johnny Mullins filled in at centre back in place of injured captain Michael Raynes, and Jamie Vincent then filled in Mullins' usual slot in the right back position.

New striker Nick Bignall played ahead of Peter Thompson who dropped to the bench.

Leeds included new signing Leigh Bromby in their line up, and they were going for goals straight from kick off in search of that 14th win.

And in truth, they got there in the end without too many disruptions from the young County side. Bignall created a few half chances and snapshots out of nothing but found that they were easily dealt with by keeper Shane Higgs.

And United were ahead before the 10 minute mark in the game, as American Mike Grella - replacing the injured Jermian Beckford - robbed Michael Rose of the ball and cut inside past Mullins before curling past fon Williams into the far corner.

And there wasn't too many hiccups for The Whites from then on.

Carl Baker, the on-fire hitman for the Hatters at the moment, could only screw the ball wide after a corner was cleared weakly by Bromby.

And shortly before half time, the Elland Road faithful were on their feet again as fon Williams was barged off the ball by the new man Bromby, but play was allowed to continue and defender Lubo Michalik rolled the ball past the grounded fon Williams.

And as the sides went in for their half time break, manager Gary Ablett was dismissed by referee McDermid for protesting the Michalik goal.

And that was the end of the goalmouth action for the tie, although 'The Fonze' still found time to save his second penalty of the season, as Vincent handled Grella's bicycle kick, and Robert Snodgrass' weak penalty was easily pushed away by Williams.

So the youthful Hatters eleven put in another gutsy performance but to no avail. Onto Yeovil though, and gaffer Ablett will surely be telling his players that they are far more winnable games than this to be concentrating on.

Come on County.

Star Player

Nick Bignall - The new striker didn't have many clear cut chances, but fought and hassled the Leeds defence to create his own opportunities on goal. With Bridcutt in midfield and Bignall up front, either side of Carl Baker, we may just have a very good attacking force on our hands here if utilised correctly.

Maybe we will cling onto L1 status this year... but only if we do not have to sell the last of the family silver in Janaury

I think you have more than enough to stay up. Battled hard and closed us down well. Bignall certainly looks like he's muscled up since last season when he played against us for Northampton.
