This month's page on the Stockport Heritage Calendar shows photos of Winters Automaton Clock, incidentally I see that the premises are now a pub!

Do the figures still work?

I remember fondly as a young boy waiting for the hour or quarter hour to hear the sound and see the figures 'pulling' the bells.

HI LGC, whilst the figures are painted up nicely I do not think they work. Winters is now a Holts pub. very cheap ale (as is the Queen's Head [Turners Vaults to some] diagonally opposite under the bridge).

I have to say, at the risk of upsetting some, that Winters is not the sort of place I would drink in - and I am short on airs and graces myself !

Thanks Cropped.

It is a pity that Holts don't get them refurbished as they were fascinating for a youngster to watch.

Next time I am walking past I will try to get a pic. And keep my ears open for any chimes.

The town centre, in terms of a nighttime economy has collapsed over the last few years. Like a ghost town on a Friday night. Very sad really.

Aye cropped, I remember when I came down the road and you took us round the town on the Saturday night, couldn't believe the lack of people as when I left the North West for pastures new in the late 60's the town centre was dynamite. A crying shame

I can confirm that the Winters clock DOES chime and chime quite loudly ! Went past the other evening just as it struck 8.

The Bakers Vaults on the Markey square has re-opened and there are plans for the Yates just off the market to open as some kind of sports bar.

So it looks like SMBC and others are trying to breath life back into the town centre.

Winters clock update.... saw the two soldiers (one with a red tunic, one with a blue) pulling the 'quarter' bells to make them ring and then old father time chiming the hour. Looks in decent nick too.

The bridge over the bottom of Lower Hillgate has been painted and detailed with nice colours.

The market was quite busy on Saturday morning.. a nice buzz about the place.

The Bakers Vaults is open again as a more up market (no pun intended) venue and I believe the Yates's wine bar is being re-opened as a Sports Bar venue.

So for all you ex-pats, things at last seem to be picking up.
